Introduction: Mapping Out a Plan for the Rest of My Life and Enjoying the Journey

My Golden Years are an extension of the life I have lived up to retirement which began on December 1, 2011. I have organized this blog to include the top ten relevant topics shown below in the right side column in General Topics. Just click on one and you will see all that I have written on that topic. Click on the Most Current tab for chronological order of all entries.

I have addressed each topic in no particular order other than what is currently on my mind on the day I am posting. I started each topic by describing where I was when I began this blog and then exploring the possibilities of progression and any goals that I would like to meet. After that, I write about the path to reach that goal as it happens. Sometimes I just write about what is happening now.

I welcome any comments and questions either on this blog or email as I travel these paths and hope to share my growth with interested persons who may find some common elements in their own path to the rest of their life. I hope to use my skills as an appraiser for nearly 30 years to continue to observe different perspectives on a subject and reconcile into a conclusion that is of value to me. Please join me whenever you like. Email notice of new posts is no longer available so just bookmark the address.

Of most importance to me is the confidence developed in my intuitive skills over the years and it is that part of my character I am trusting to define value in my life. I believe change can be good and I can be enriched by believing in my true self using my intuition. The analytical part of my life no longer has a financial grip and I can let go of what absolutely made sense at the time in favor of what feels right now. I have done a lot of work since this blog began in 2011 and I hope you will join me as I explore this approach in My Golden Years.

2021 - April is a Time to Renew and Grow

Finally moving towards a normal life after pandemic restrictions which began in March of 2020.  No April Fool here as caution was still a priority until a couple weeks after personally receiving the second vaccination.  No active COVID cases in my county and vaccines are readily available for most people this month.  Right now I am seeing more people going without masks but respectful for those that choose to keep them on and the larger public businesses that still encourage it.  Larger areas like Springfield, Missouri still have city-wide ordinances in place.  As active cases keep dropping and more people are vaccinated, getting back to normal routines are getting more liberal everyday.  The weather is fickle this spring with early above average temperatures then a couple below normal cold snaps.  Fortunately, my gardening experience has given me the confidence to wait until mid to late April to plant.  Moving forward...

View from our carport of our main garden areas.

Terraced gardens are complete this year.  It was over 40 years ago that the first one was constructed and several of the early ones have been redone from the original wood to masonry now.  The newest one now is for strawberries.  Most plants that come up now are established from previous years and include many natives.  The lawn to mow has been reduced to 30 minutes edged with perennial plants.  The open areas are filled with vegetables we eat and annuals we love for color and scent.  Gardening is a real joy now and provides just enough exercise and fresh air to keep healthy.  It took a lot of work over the years to get to this point.  There likely will be more changes in the future just because that's what we love to do!

Bobi Kitty turned 8 years old and got a new tunnel thingy along with fresh catnip in all his toys.  He is our Garden Kitty and a real joy as he inspects all the work we do which I'm sure he thinks is all for him.  This busy month allowed for time with my granddaughter which is the biggest joy of all as she is so much fun at nearly 4 years old.

I love that she loves puzzles like I do!

She likes to do this puzzle again and again all by herself!

Riding her bike...

...scooter...

...pulling her wagon...

...and building with her Magna Tiles kept us busy and having fun!

On Easter Sunday we had Mass for the first time in well over a year.  I wish they would continue on Sundays but the majority seems to like Saturday afternoons which doesn't work well for me.  Here I am in my first dress for the season with our new deck and tavern-height table and swivel chairs.

Our new poly outdoor furniture consists of a glider chair and footstool for me and my husband wanted the glider-swivel chair.  We are very happy with our choices!  The gardens look lovely from here!

Bobi Kitty owns the yard and has many places now to hide and sleep.

The view from my front patio of the yard shows all the spring blooms.  These tulips were from the original dozen and were successfully transplanted last Fall.

April is the best month to view nature along the river trail near our home.  The 3-mile trail has so many areas I have come to enjoy off into the nearby woods.  Here there are so many Mayapples...

..and Wake Robin (aka Trillium)...

...and Cut-Leafed Toothwort...

...and the first morel mushroom of many this year.

Below the dam are large fields where young people have begun to come out and play soccer.  Soon the area school track teams will be running all over the place.

Cleanup time at our Master Gardener Volunteer Project  - Settlers Village in Wheatland, Missouri.  My husband and I do the center gardens between re-settled area log cabins.

This is the Heritage Garden in Settlers Village that I plant mostly in native prairie plants.

Dogwoods are blooming all over including in my yard.

Excess Lily-of-the-Valley and Ajuga in my yard are put together to take to the gardeners in my Silver Sneakers Gym Class.

This area is under the redbud trees in my yard which needed a lot of weeding and transplanting ajuga because the lily-of-the-valley got away from their designated area.

Also transplanted were 10 Cora Bells under the redbud trees.

On the right are the lily-of-the-valley.  That is where they can stay.  On the left of the sidewalk are many Hosta varieties.

This is Bobi Kitty's Garden of Pleasure between the new strawberry garden and my swing area.  I planted catnip and cat grass for him.

It was a good year for finding Morel Mushrooms!

Wouldn't you know it would snow!  Then a cold spell came and some things like the Hostas needed covered.  I am a seasoned gardener and knew not to plant too early!  Nothing in my yard took a hit.

By the end of the month, orioles and  hummingbirds were coming to my feeders.

Time to have fun in my yard as all work and no play...

...with lots of new blooms everyday...

...makes for a delicious taste of life with steak and morel mushrooms eaten...

...with pleasure from our new deck overseeing the fruits of our labor!

Nature is showing off her beauty everywhere.  Here is a Rusty Blackhaw bloom...

...and a Dwarf Larkspur.

A Summer Tanager follows me around while I'm finding morel mushrooms in the woods swooping down and scarfing up newly hatched flying insects to eat.  We both are happy and thankful for this time to renew and grow with all that Spring has to offer!

2021 - A New Normal

Soon it will be 10 years since my first post on this blog in August 2011.  The purpose was to prepare myself for retirement in December 2011 defining what is of value to me and applying it to the rest of my life.  It has been a successful journey and I hope the over 42,000 readers and followers were able to enjoy it as much as I have.  It has become a great personal journal that I reference as often as I want.  I think it will be around for a long time as there doesn't appear to be any limitations.

If you have been a follower, you may have noticed the posts have decreased in recent years as I have reached many of the goals I had set for myself and mostly because I don't like repeating similar posts.  My retirement has been a success and all indications are that it will continue on that path even if I change direction somewhat about what I feel like writing about.  I still love to write!  I just got this notice from the blog administrators:

"FollowByEmail widget (Feedburner) is going away...After July 2021, your feed will still continue to work, but the automated emails to your subscribers will no longer be supported. If you’d like to continue sending emails, you can download your subscriber contacts."

So what this means is that those readers that wait to get an email that I have a new post will no longer get email notice.  I will remove the "Follow by Email" widget on the first page of my blog.  Even if I knew all my readers and followers, I would not put their privacy at risk by providing their addresses to another source!  I have never had that information anyway. You will decide if you want to see my future posts after July 2021 by bookmarking my blog address and just checking at your convenience for any new posts.  I suggest you check once a month.  I still want to share my thoughts and events at least to the end of 2021 and will re-examine my desires in the new year.

I have completed one long chapter covering my first ten years in my autobiography earlier this year and may get back on track with that project.  I also have not progressed much in my goal to digitized about 40 years of hard copy photos.  I think I may combine this process with the writing of my autobiography which worked well for that first chapter.  I think if I commit to this huge project and make it my priority, I may write less in my blog.  But like I did for 2020, I may catch up one year of thoughts and events in a few posts at the end of the year.  So at least check my blog at the end of a year, if you are still interested.  I may write in my blog about the progress of my autobiography and share some things I discover about my younger self from my new perspective starting at my current age of 67.  Maybe the reader can travel back in time with me and look at their own memories from the 1950s to the present.  This will take time.  Since I own my own time in retirement, my New Normal can be any combination of past, present, and future!

2021 - Moving Forward in 2021 - January, February, March

January

Hoppin' John  - Traditional New Year First Meal for Good Luck

The new year started out with hope and optimism.  The prevalent attitude was that 2021 couldn't be worse than 2020 which had set the bar at its lowest level in American history.  A worldwide pandemic and American politics affected every aspect of life as we knew it.  Caution was in the air as everyone wore masks and kept at a distance.  Look before you leap and being wary of people around who might react unreasonable and maybe even violently.  But most of all, don't poke the hornets nest and just walk on by to your destination.  Everyday was heartbreaking with news of lives lost or affected from COVID-19.  The reality of a vaccine soon was very hopeful.

January 6, 2021 will go down in history as the day the Republican Losers violently tried and failed to overturn our government.  The details are widely published from the visual recordings, in-person witnesses, with all the world watching in real time on media.  The big lies could not compete with the truth which became widely available and accepted by the majority through unbiased fact-checking published through the media.  The convictions and punishments are ongoing for those that broke the laws.  The Republican Losers did not gain any ground in their cause but became bigger losers as the former president distanced himself all along the way while poking the hornets nest with his defiance and lies from a safe place.  It was so good to see him leave the White House with so many good citizens collectively slamming the door on his ass in their minds!  Good riddance and good bye! I do believe our country needs at least two strong political parties for good representation.  The Republicans chose a man with weak character that did more harm than good in his four years as president.  I hope and pray they don't make that mistake again!  Now our new Democratic president has a big mess to clean up and many executive orders to reverse so we can move forward and prosper.  So far so good.  He is much more popular, knowledgeable, and experienced for the job.

Thanksgiving Cactus

My first visual sign of hope came from my Thanksgiving Cactus that didn't bloom for Thanksgiving or for Christmas.  I think it was appropriate that it waited until after 2020 was over as it may have been afraid to come out in such a negative world.  So here it bloomed and gave me some much needed joy in January!

Pineapple Plant (Bromeliad)

The Christmas present from our son and his wife came a couple weeks past the holidays but was a very welcome surprise!  The tiny pineapple growing gave me hope that with loving care, we will have fruit bear later this year.  Really a neat plant that brightened up the winter months for us!

New Puzzle Board

While the world outside was in COVID pandemic and restless political turmoil, I spent many hours safe inside with my new puzzle board.  This was where I was at the time of the historical attack on the Nation's Capital Building in Washington, D. C.  I stood up and watched on TV as it went down in plain view for all to see after their loser of a leader encouraged them in his public speech.  I was appalled while many supporters of that Loser were in denial.  Seeing is believing and many followers just went silent in their stupidity.  The votes were counted and verified through the traditional electoral process in spite of the violence.

I was feeling very much alone.  Not the first time and likely not the last time.  This was a time I needed to be alone to assess who in the world I wanted in my world.  Best place to think it out is at nearby Ha Ha Tonka State Park walking up and down the stairs and trails on a mild January day.  The Castle shows me that even something that appears in ruin can bring people together.  Also, a natural spring will flow and bring life to all around it from a greater source if you come to it.  I love nature and I love humans but human nature really can disappoint sometimes!

Happy Inauguration Day * Biden * Harris Celebration Cake

This was a good time to use my skills to bake a cake and eat it too!  It not only tasted good but felt so good to share it with my husband who actually ate one piece before I threw the rest in the garbage.  Diabetics don't need more than one piece.  It made me happy and was such a sweet day to celebrate!

On January 22, 2021, we received our 1st COVID vaccine at the local county health department.  I think it was just the second day it was available and we got right in!  Both of us just had a sore arm at the injection site.  Now we wait 4 weeks for the 2nd vaccine.  In the meantime, life goes on with caution but much more hope!  It's still a cold winter to wait out.

Feeding the cardinals with joy!

February

Winter is in full swing as Bobi Kitty observes from his warm place inside.

Daughter and Granddaughter enjoying the snow...

...and sledding!

Negative 20 degrees was the coldest I've ever experienced in Missouri!

Super Bowl Sunday was all about the food - 3 kinds of wings, chips & dips, and veggies!  Too bad the Kansas Chiefs lost this year but it was an exciting game!

Comfort foods included homemade chicken 'n noodles over mashed potatoes for several meals.

First crocus flowers blooming in my yard brings hope for spring!

On February 22, 2012, we received our 2nd COVID vaccine!  We were making plans to get back to as normal as possible in the next couple weeks.  I'm thinking deep tissue massage appointments, eating inside restaurants, leisure shopping at the malls, regular gym attendance, and not wearing masks everywhere as people move around cautiously and restrictions are slowly lifted.  Still keeping a mask handy!  We did attend our favorite yearly public event in Springfield - The Home and Garden Show less than two weeks after our 2nd vaccine.  We had a direct purpose and did not linger around as much as we usually would in previous years.  We wanted to buy some new poly furniture for our new deck.  We found what we were looking for and put in a custom order to be delivered in 4-6 weeks.  It was more than we had hoped for and at a better price than we expected!  Last year's attempt to purchase didn't end well.  We even had extra stimulus money to get more this year!

My reaction to the 2nd vaccine was not pleasant with a sore arm at the injection site, all joints painful, whole body fatigue, 99.9 fever for 5 hours, stiff neck, no appetite, and lost 5 pounds in 2 days but still had taste and smell.  When it was over after 48 hours, I was energetic and feeling great!  Really moving forward now...

The month of February ended with another uplifting hike to Ha Ha Tonka castle ruins as the daylight increased.

March

This month I began going back to the gym in Bolivar.  It had been almost one year since the pandemic closed it down and the YMCA left it vacant.  It was picked up by the City of Bolivar and the Silver Sneakers Program continued with much less attendance and every other exercise machine blocked off from use for safe distancing.  It felt so good to get back on track with my three days a week; two hours per day routine.  The weather was nice some days to hike the 3-mile river trail close to home also.  I was happy to be rid of the five pounds I had gained over the winter and my energy was increasing!  We had our in-home health nurse come by for a wellness visit with dental and eye appointments made.  We are okay.

It was now time to have our granddaughter come for an extended weekend stay at our house again.  This is the greatest joy in my life!  She is such a loving child and so much fun!  Here are some of the highlights from her visit...

Checking out the new and final rock garden project by Grandpa which will be my new strawberry garden.

Dust mopping chores are fun

Watching Grandpa clean and wax his kayak getting it ready for a new fishing season

Definitely getting close to normal by the end of March as we venture out bravely and confidently to eat inside restaurants and almost made plans to take a trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The spa bath experience we have enjoyed most years since the 1990s at The Arlington Hotel were only open during the weekends yet.  So we will wait until late October and hope that part of our lives will move forward.  So far, so good!  In our Hickory County, we have only had 1-2 active COVID cases the past few months and none in April with vaccination rates high.  i understand much of the world is not there yet and caution is still a priority since no vaccine in 100%.  We are definitely moving forward in 2021!
