Introduction: Mapping Out a Plan for the Rest of My Life and Enjoying the Journey

My Golden Years are an extension of the life I have lived up to retirement which began on December 1, 2011. I have organized this blog to include the top ten relevant topics shown below in the right side column in General Topics. Just click on one and you will see all that I have written on that topic. Click on the Most Current tab for chronological order of all entries.

I have addressed each topic in no particular order other than what is currently on my mind on the day I am posting. I started each topic by describing where I was when I began this blog and then exploring the possibilities of progression and any goals that I would like to meet. After that, I write about the path to reach that goal as it happens. Sometimes I just write about what is happening now.

I welcome any comments and questions either on this blog or email as I travel these paths and hope to share my growth with interested persons who may find some common elements in their own path to the rest of their life. I hope to use my skills as an appraiser for nearly 30 years to continue to observe different perspectives on a subject and reconcile into a conclusion that is of value to me. Of most importance to me is the confidence developed in my intuitive skills over the years and it is that part of my character I am trusting to define value in my life. I believe change can be good and I can be enriched by believing in my true self using my intuition. The analytical part of my life no longer has a financial grip and I can let go of what absolutely made sense at the time in favor of what feels right now. I have done a lot of work since this blog began in 2011 and I hope you will join me as I explore this approach in My Golden Years.

Cabin Fever



Mid-January in Missouri and I'm restless.  I'm also a little irritable, irregular, unbalanced, and spend too much time indoors because the weather is fickle.  I have a dozen projects planned for such a time but lack the drive and motivation to get started.  When I do get into something, I lose interest with the first minor distraction.  I have Cabin Fever.

This happens every year at this time.  The first signs begin shortly after the New Year buzz of new beginnings wears thin.  Got the new calendars up.  Did some deep cleaning here and there that will do until Spring.  Poking around the office paperwork slowly shredding the old and organizing the new in an ever improving way; vowing to do better on my budget.  Put on my 'fat' jeans because that's how I feel although my regular jeans fit okay.  I haven't really started scanning and digitizing the old photos or started back up with genealogy as I thought I would by now; just not into it, I guess I'm hoping for some direct family interest.  Haven't got very far reorganizing my MP3 player playlists either.  Haven't even gave a second thought to sewing projects, fly-tying, or arts and crafts projects I thought I was interested in at one time.  Pushing myself to do something useful and hopefully interesting instead of taking an afternoon nap and/or streaming movies and TV series.

Knowing this was coming, I started my SBU Wellness Center membership as soon as the snow cleared the roads and I could get out.  It has been a major effort to drag my butt and duffel bag 30 miles in the cold to keep it moving.  I will begin my third week early tomorrow morning and am looking forward to a special day out that begins with a Zumba class.  So far, I've barely kept up in that class and may actually have more fun than frustration this next time.  Then I will treadmill for another hour. and lift weights for a total of two hours moving at the Wellness Center.   Hopefully, I will be energized by mid-morning before I drive another 25 miles south to Springfield.

I am having my "Christmas in January" day which I planned for this Cabin Fever time.  My family gave me gift cards this year at Christmas and I'm using them all on one day out.  It will start with a gift lunch at Panera Bread from my daughter because she knows how much I enjoy that restaurant.  I even have a couple coupons as to not use up all the generous gift card.  One is $1 off any soup and a free birthday dessert from last month that is still good.  Then I have a massage appointment at Grove Spa which includes a deep tissue massage for 60 minutes, foot scrub, and back polish.  That generous gift was from my husband.  Then finally, I will be all relaxed to sit in a luxurious leather recliner at the Starplex Cinema courtesy of my son and daughter-in-law who gave us a generous movie pass.  I think I'll see Saving Mr. Banks, a movie with Tom Hanks about Walt Disney and Mary Poppins.

P.S.  I saw the movie and it was a wonderful "inner child" experience for me!  I laughed.  I cried.  I sang.  For me it was all about the magic that is "Disney."  1964 was a sad time in our nation's history after the Novemeber 1963 Kennedy Assasination and I was an 11 year old girl whose mother was having her first big cancer.  Mary Poppins was the one who could come in and "fix" everything and make it right again; such was the magic of movies...especially Disney ones!  The background in making this movie, as seen through adult eyes now, again helped me see ways to cope with things that were out of my control and come to a place of joy again.  I needed that!  Of course, having a deep tissue massage just before seeing the movie certainly helped in opening all tensions and the tears flowed readily.  Overall, it was a movie that you leave smiling :)

Hopefully, this will rejuvenate me as I continue the rest of the week with my Wellness Center schedule.  I have also begun Continuing Education online classes last week.  I need 28 hours by June and it's going slow because I know there's no rush and I can do it in just 8 hours a month or a couple mornings a week most weeks.  I do this ever two years to keep up my Appraisal General Certification although I'm not seeking work in my field since I retired two years ago after 30 years working for the state.  I'll write more about that in my blog when I get it done.  Last night was my first Master Naturalist class which is an old dream finally coming true from my youth to work in conservation!  I will write more about that later as it will continue until May then there will be much volunteer hours full of interesting outdoor projects and people.

So maybe I'm doing okay with what is happening now and in the near future!  Next month begins a new season of Master Gardener service projects and this year my husband will be a big part with me as he got his training done December 2013 online and gardening is what we love doing together more than anything else!  We have started planning our own gardens already and will likely be starting some seeds soon and some early cold crops by March.  March is when fly-fishing season begins!  Probably will have the kayaks out and ready for the first nice day!  We are starting to plan a trip for our 40th wedding anniversary in May; likely Hot Springs, Arkansas!  I also want to spend time with my Virginia family in the Fall!

Okay, I will stay with this momentum and keep it going until this Cabin Fever breaks and not sabotage it with all those other planned projects I haven't got done or even started much and concentrate on what I can get done that is fun and look forward to better weather when I will be at my best!

Wellness Center at SBU - Year 21

This is going to be a FUN year for health!  At age 60, I have gained the knowledge, experience, discipline, and motivation for a healthy lifestyle.  It has not been an easy road but I have the confidence now to have what it takes to succeed and to have fun doing it.  It begins this year with my membership at The Wellness Center at Southwest Baptist University (SBU) in Bolivar, Missouri.  It is my 21st year going there January to May 2-3 times a week.  For more information about SBU and my past experiences there, please type "SBU" into the "Search This Blog" tool located on the right.  For this blog article, I will concentrate on the present time…let the fun begin!

What is different this year is that I have seen and felt the results of all my past efforts and now believe I am healthier than I ever have been.  All the emotional set-backs, surgeries, diabetes diagnosis, work stresses have been either conquered or managed.  I now have the strength, both physical and emotional, to meet any of life's challenges.  I am in a good place open to happiness and fun that is well earned.  I will do whatever it takes to hang onto this wonderful attitude and balance life's priorities because I am worth it.  By taking care of me, I can have the energy needed to give to others and have a fulfilling life.
I am not trying to be young again and have no desire to look like a woman younger than my age.  I want to re-define old.  I want to get older!

So this year, I begin to have more fun by joining more exercise classes.  Understand that this Wellness Center has an age mix so I'm not the only gray-haired old lady in the group of lovely, vibrant college-age youth.  I love their energy!  I love feeling inclusive as the atmosphere at this Baptist University is genuinely religious-based and progressive.  I try to ignore the highly influenced right-wing conservatism that is prevalent all around mostly from Senator Roy Blunt, a major Republican contributing alumni.  It is something I have adjusted to all these years and it doesn't bother me as much anymore.  I just wear my headphones and listen to my music when using the machines instead of Fox News which is about the only channel they allow besides sports on the TV's.  I have noticed lately that other people complain and/or just change the channels which is usually locked by staff.  Progress.

My routine this January to May will be similar to what I have done the first week but will change up as needed:

Wednesday - Zumba Class: 45 minutes, Treadmill: 60 minutes, Weights: 15 minutes

Thursday - PiYo (Pilates/Yoga): 45 minutes, Treadmill: 45 minutes, Lap Swimming: 30 minutes

Friday - Treadmill: 45 minutes, Weights: 15 minutes, Lap Swimming: 30 minutes

Other classes include Body Sculpting which I took the first week and have not fully recovered yet!  Other classes I have not done yet this year but might are Cardio Step Kickboxing and Stretch & Flex.  There's an Aqua Class of some sort but I get a good work out doing laps that I love the most.  I will check the monthly schedules to see if any new classes are added.  20 classes and I get a T-shirt!  Woop-Woop!

Now when the weather is above 50 degrees, I may choose to walk 3 miles (60 minutes) on my regular favorite trail below the dam near where I live.  I do this most of the year in addition to whatever else I do.  Also, when the weather is not good and/or I don't feel like driving the 30 miles to SBU, I have my personal elliptical machine in my Yoga Room (Jake's old bedroom).  Bicycling and kayaking are more regular routines June through November.  I will also find time for my beloved fly-fishing.  Fun stuff!

As I write this, I have done three classes and four days so far at The Wellness Center.  I am sore and have not lost any of the weight I gained over the holidays.  I know that it usually takes two weeks to feel and see the progress.  I'm working on it...
